USA U19 Team Defeats Russia in World Championships Eight-Final Round Game

The 2009 USA U19 World Championship Team, of which UF head coach Amanda Butler is an assistant of, upended Russia, 75-56, Tuesday afternoon in Bangkok, Thailand.
Playing its second of three games in Group F of the eight-final round, the USA held a 40-32 halftime lead, but Russia (4-1) chipped away and closed the gap to 55-50 entering the final 10 minutes of play. That's when the Red, White & Blue stepped up and ended the game on a 20-6 run for the final deficit.
Four players tallied a double-figure scoring effort for the USA, with Nnemkadi Ogwumike (Stanford / Cypress, Texas) leading the way with 12 points and 13 rebounds, helping the team hold a 50-34 rebounding advantage, while limiting Russia to just a 26.3 shooting percentage (20-76), including a 24.1 percent mark from the 3-point arc (7-29).
The USA (4-1) plays Japan (2-3) in the final game of this second round on Wed., July 29 at 2 a.m. EDT. The top four teams from Group F advance to the quarterfinal round, which will be played on July 31. Semifinal action is scheduled for Aug. 1 and the gold medal game will be contested on Aug. 2.
