Saturday, July 4, 2009 | Women's Basketball
University of Florida rising sophomore Azania Stewart (Wood Green, England) helped her native Great Britain basketball team to a 76-67 victory over host country Serbia in the first round of Group play at the World University Games.
Stewart and GB trailed 42-30 after two quarters, but rallied with a convincing 24-7 spurt in the third quarter and closed the fourth period outscoring Serbia 22-18 for the win. Stewart totaled seven points on 3-of-9 shooting from the floor and hitting her lone free throw attempt, while collecting six rebounds and dishing a pair of assists.
GB continues with Group A play on Thursday, when the squad faces the talented and powerful USA, which toppled France, 115-30, in its opening round game.
Stewart continues to update The Gator Nation in her BLOG about her summer experience, as she is suiting up on the basketball court for her native England. Shortly after Great Britain won its opening-round contest at the World University Games, Stewart quickly checked it and posted her seventh BLOG entry about the experience.
Azania promised to share her summer adventures as often as she can and her blog can be read on www.CoachAmandaButler.com. From the main page of the website, click on the “GATOR TALK” icon.
