Monday, July 6, 2009 | Men's Swimming & Diving
Gator swimmer Stephanie Proud (Durham, England) was the top qualifier in the 200-meter backstroke semifinals, breaking a World University Games record with her 2:10.27 performance Sunday at the Tasmajdan.
Proud, representing Great Britain in Serbia, clocked the second-fastest time in UF history in the event, while advancing to the Monday final and breaking the 10-year-old Games record (2:10.32), set by Miki Nakao of Japan in 1999.
On the men's side, rising Florida junior Balazs Gercsak (Budapest, Hungary) competed in finals of the men's 400-meter freestyle for Hungary, finishing seventh and touching in at 3:51.18. Gercsak's time landed him the third-fastest time in Gator history.
Both Proud and Gercsak will be back in action Monday from Belgrade for day two of competition at the 25th Universiade.
