Proctor Wins Anguila's First-Ever Gold Medal
Wednesday, July 8, 2009 | Track and Field
Junior Florida jumper Shara Proctor (The Valley, Anguila) captured the first gold medal in a championship event in the history of her native Anguila, by claiming the long jump title this past week at the 22nd Central American and Caribbean Athletics Championships at Havana's Estadio Panamericano.
Proctor, the 2009 SEC Outdoor Champion in both the long jump and triple jump, posted a leap of 21-8.25/6.61m to come away with the title. Proctor was the first of two athletes from her home country to take home a gold medal this weekend, in the country's finest track and field performance at a championship event in history.
Proctor defeated Trinidad and Tobago's 2006 World Junior Champion Rhonda Watkins (21-2.75/6.47m) and Bahamas' defending champion Bianca Stuart (20- 8.50/6.31m) en route to the victory.
