Pouncey Brothers Named to Outland Trophy Watch List
Tuesday, August 11, 2009 | Football
Offensive linemen Maurkice Pouncey (Lakeland, Fla.) and Mike Pouncey (Lakeland, Fla.) were named to the 2009 Outland Trophy Watch List, as announced on Tuesday. The Outland Trophy recognizes the outstanding interior linemen – tackles, guards and centers on both sides of the ball.
The Southeastern and Big 12 conferences dominated the 40-man 2009 Outland Trophy Watch List that was released today and featured on ESPN's "College Football Live." The SEC placed 10 players on the list and the Big 12 had nine, with no other conference having more than four players on the prestigious list.
Oklahoma and Texas from the Big 12; Florida, Georgia and Alabama from the SEC; USC from the Pac-10; and Penn State from the Big 10 each had two players on the list.
Maurkice has appeared in 27 games with 26 starts and was Florida's starting center in all 14 games during the 2008 season, including the Gators' 2008 SEC and FedEx BCS National Championship Game victories. He garnered SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week Oct. 6 for his performance against Arkansas and was one of five UF Offensive Players of the Week after the offensive line's success against LSU.
Mike has seen action in 25 games at Florida, including 17 starts in his career. He was a 2008 second-team All-SEC selection by vote of the league's head coaches, an AP All-SEC Honorable Mention selection and a CollegeFootballNews.com All-Sophomore Selection.
The Outland Trophy, presented annually since 1946, is the third oldest award in major college football. The winner of the Outland Trophy, named after the late John Outland, an All-America lineman at Penn and Kansas at the turn of the century, will be announced on the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show on Dec. 10 in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
The Outland Trophy presentation banquet, sponsored by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee, will be held on Jan. 14 in Omaha, Neb.
