Dunlap, Spikes Named To Bednarik Watch List

Junior defensive end Carlos Dunlap (North Charleston, S.C.) and senior linebacker Brandon Spikes (Shelby, N.C.) were named to the 2009 Watch List for the 15th Chuck Bednarik Award, as announced by the Maxwell Football Club.
The award, given to the most outstanding defensive players of the year, has been presented since 1995 and is named in honor of Chuck Bednarik, a former University of Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Eagle great. Bednarik is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame 69' and the NFL Hall of Fame 67'.
Dunlap, the Defensive MVP of the BCS National Championship game, tallied 39 tackles, including 21 solo and 18 assisted, while racking up a team-leading 13.5 tackles for loss and 9.5 quarterback sacks in 2008. In addition, he blocked three punts in his sophomore campaign, the most of any player under Coach Meyer.
Spikes was named a consensus first-team All-American and first-team All-SEC performer in 2008 in addition to being selected as a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and a semifinalist for the Lombardi Award and 2008 Chuck Bednarik Award. He was one of only five linebackers in the nation with two interception returns for touchdowns last season, which tied the school record.
Recent winners of the Bednarik Award include Rey Maualuga (USC) in 2008 and Dan Connor (Penn State), Paul Posluszny (Penn State), David Pollack (Georgia) and Teddy Lehman (Oklahoma).
Semifinalists for the Chuck Bednarik Award will be announced on November 4th and three finalists for the award will be announced November 23rd. The winner of the 2009 Chuck Bednarik Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show which will be held on December 10, 2009. The formal presentation of this award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Harrah's Entertainment Atlantic City on March 5, 2010.
