Wednesday, August 5, 2009 | Football
University of Florida junior punter Chas Henry (Dallas, Ga.) was named to the 2009 Ray Guy Award watch list, announced today by The Greater Augusta Sports Council. The award is given annually to the nation's top collegiate punter.
The pre-season list is comprised of a select group of punters who stood out during the 2008 season, including five returning Ray Guy semi-finalists. The number of eligible candidates will grow when the award opens for nominations in mid-August. A complete list of candidates will be released in late-October.
The watch list will be narrowed to ten semi-finalists in mid-November. A national body of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) sports information directors, coaches, media representatives, and previous Ray Guy Award winners will then vote for the top three finalists, and ultimately the winner. The winner will be announced live during the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show airing on ESPN December 10.
Henry has handled all the punting duties for the Gators for the past two seasons. He was named a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award in 2008 after averaging 43.4 yards per punt (ranked third in the SEC). Fifteen of his 44 punts last season went for more than 50 yards, and 21 punts were inside the 20-yard-line. Henry stepped up his performance on the big stage, averaging 51.7 yards per punt in the BCS National Championship Game against Oklahoma and 47.7 yards per punt against Alabama, setting an SEC Championship Game record. He also had a career-long 67-yard punt against Florida State, the eighth-longest punt in school history.
