M. Golf To Open Season at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational

The University of Florida men's golf team will open the 2009-10 season on Friday, Sept. 18, at the Olympia Fields Country Club/Fighting Illini Invitational in Olympia Fields, Ill. The tournament is hosted by the University of Illinois at the Olympia Fields Country Club.
The Gators have crafted a tradition of fast starts having not finished outside of the top 5 in their last five season openers.
Head coach Buddy Alexander will bring a lineup of sophomore Max Kieffer (Duesseldorf, Germany), senior Tyson Alexander (Gainesville, Fla.), redshirt junior Andres Echavarria (Medellin, Columbia), junior Bank Vongvanji (Bradenton, Fla.), and senior Tim McKenney (Scottsdale, Ariz.) in the season-opening event.
The elite field at the Fighting Illini Invitational will feature the top two teams in the country – Stanford (1st) and Oklahoma (2nd). Also, it will include seven of the top ten teams and 12 of the top 30 in the country. The invitational will feature Arizona State (5th), Illinois (6th), Georgia (7th), Augusta State (8th), Texas (10th), USC (16th), Florida (18th), and Florida State (25th).
The Gators will tee off at the Olympia Fields Country Club, one of the Midwest and indeed the nation's preeminent golfing venues. Olympia Fields Country Club has hosted U.S. Opens in 1928 and 2003 and the 1925 and 1961 PGA Championships. Most recently, the course has become home to one of the top collegiate events in the country each year. This weekend marks the Fourth Annual Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational presented by Cleveland Golf/Srixon.
