Women's Tennis Impressive on Opening Day at Gator Fall Classic
Friday, September 25, 2009 | Women's Tennis
The University of Florida women's tennis team turned in several impressive performances on the first day of play at the Gator Fall Classic Friday at the Ring Tennis Complex.
Three Gator doubles teams began the event and each earned convincing victories, highlighted by the tandem of senior Marrit Boonstra (The Netherlands) and freshman Allie Will (Boca Raton, Fla.), who netted an 8-4 win over Ole Miss' ninth-ranked team of Kristi Boxx and Karen Nijssen.
While not facing a ranked opponent, UF's other two doubles teams were equally impressive, as the pair of freshman Lauren Embree (Marco Island, Fla.) and senior Anastasia Revzina (Russia) downed Ole Miss' Gabriela Rangel and Connor Vogel, 8-1, and the sophomore duo of Jessica Alexander (Dallas, Texas) and Joanna Mather (Duluth, Ga.) downed Abigail Guthrie and Pippa Reakes, 8-1.
“I was particularly impressed with our doubles. For this being the first time those teams had played together after not much practice, I really liked what I saw from them,” UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “Our veteran players are helping our younger players with play calling, which is what we expect them to do. I thought everyone competed hard and competed well. It was a great first day.”
The Gators took that energy and momentum from the doubles court into singles play and didn't miss a beat, as four of the five who competed tallied victories, each in straight sets. Boonstra, Mather and Will joined sophomore newcomer Claire Bartlett (Chattanooga, Tenn.) with wins, while freshman Brittany Borsanyi (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) dropped a hard-fought three-setter.
Will was the first Gator who punched a result, as she blanked UCF's Alexis Rodriguez, 6-0, 6-0.
“My teammates really helped me. We all had a lot of energy and I fed off that energy,” Will said. “I really enjoyed playing my first home matches. I had a little nerves at first, but my doubles partner was a senior, Marrit Boonstra, and she really helped me get through that. I think I built a lot of confidence today during doubles and I was relaxed and ready for singles. It ended up being a great day.”
Bartlett was equally impressive in her home court debut, as she netted a 6-0, 6-1 victory over UCF's Taylor Dubins, while Mather chalked up a 6-1, 6-2 decision against Jenna Doerfler and Boonstra polished off Jenny Frisell, 6-4, 6-1, also from UCF. Borsanyi had a few match-points in the second-set tiebreaker, but couldn't close out UCF's Allison Hodges and lost 4-6, 7-6 (13-11), 1-0 (10-7).
Action resumes on Saturday at 1 p.m. with doubles play, followed by a short break and singles matches. Admission is free.
