University of Florida senior athlete Brandon James (St. Augustine, Fla.) has been named the Southeastern Conference Co-Special Teams Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. The recognition marks the fourth time that James has received the special teams' nod, collecting the honor once in 2007 (vs. Tennessee) and twice in 2008 (vs. Hawaii, at Tennessee).
James collected 123 all-purpose yards, including an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, in Florida's 62-3 victory over Charleston Southern on Saturday. It was the first time James had returned a kickoff for a touchdown in his career, giving him five total touchdowns on kickoff and punt returns. His five return touchdowns ranks third in SEC history and is second among all active players in the Football Bowl Subdivision.
With his kickoff return for a touchdown, James became only the second player in UF history to have a punt and kick return for a touchdown, joining former Gator Harvin Clark. The kickoff return was UF's first for a touchdown since 1999 and only the 10th in school history. James also had one carry for 25 yards, a career-long rush.
Arkansas sophomore Dennis Johnson was also named Co-Special Teams Player of the Week after returning the opening kickoff 91 yards for a TD and totaling 115 kickoff return yards on two attempts.
Florida will face Troy University on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 12:21 p.m. ET at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. The game will air live on the SEC Network. Check www.GatorZone.com for local listings.
