Maurkice Pouncey (Lakeland, Fla.) was presented with the 2009 Rimington Trophy in a ceremony held at the Rococo Theatre on Saturday night in Lincoln, Neb. The Rimington Trophy is awarded annually to the most outstanding center in NCAA Division I-A football.
Pouncey, who is the first Gator to win the award and only the second Gator to be named a finalist, was up against John Estes (Hawaii), Chris Hall (Texas), Jake Kirkpatrick (TCU), Matthew Tennant (Boston College) and J.D. Walton (Baylor) for the award which honors the top center in college football. He was named the winner in December at the ESPNU/Home Depot College Football Awards show.
Pouncey tallied 40 career starts over his three seasons, while also garnered recognition as a first-team All-American by Walter Camp, the FWAA, Sporting News and CBSSports.com. He received second-team All-America and first-team All-SEC recognition from the Associated Press. Pouncey helped power the Florida offense which ranked No. 1 in the SEC in 2009 with 457.9 yards per game, including 221.8 rushing yards per game, 10th-highest in the nation.
In January, Pouncey announced his decision to declare for the 2010 NFL Draft.
