Softball Hosts Swinging for Cancer on Saturday
Wednesday, January 27, 2010 | Softball
The University of Florida softball team is hosting “Swinging for Cancer” on Saturday, Jan. 30 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium. The Gators are raising money for the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation.
Admission is free and fans are invited to mingle with softball players and other student-athletes. The first 500 fans will receive a commemorative Women's College World Series softball. The UF cheerleaders and mascots Albert and Alberta will be on-site for photos. A KidZone for children 12 and under will feature face painting and games. The Gators will also be putting on a mini-skills clinic for children 12 and under.
Representatives from Friends on Jaclyn will be on-hand to take pledges (no cash accepted). This organization matches athletic teams with pediatric brain tumor patients in order to give them a supportive group of friends. In the fall of 2009, the Gator softball team adopted 13-year-old Heather Braswell, from Orlando, Fla., who will be in attendance.
At 2:45 p.m., Florida student-athletes and coaches will compete against each other in a hitting contest as All-American pitcher Stephanie Brombacher (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) delivers the pitches. Each competitor will get five chances to hit off of Florida's undefeated pitcher. A point system will be in place to crown a winner. Fans can enjoy the show as Gators try their luck against Brombacher.
An autograph session caps off the fun-filled day from 3:15 to 3:45 p.m.
The Gators start the 2010 season against Georgia Tech on Friday, Feb. 12 at 4 p.m. This game is the first of the five-game USF Wilson-DeMarini Tournament in Clearwater, Fla. They open at home on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 5 p.m. against Jacksonville.
