Gator junior forward Alex Tyus (St. Louis, Mo.) scored 23 points, and UF guards Erving Walker (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Kenny Boynton (Pompano Beach, Fla.) added 21 apiece as Florida downed Georgia, 87-71, Wednesday night in the O'Connell Center.
The Gators (15-5, 4-2 SEC) extended their winning streak to four and continued their recent domination in the series. Florida has won 12 of the last 13 meetings and now owns eight straight in the series in Gainesville.
Walker recorded his first career double-double, dishing out 10 assists to accompany his 21 points, and finished a career-best 9-of-12 from the charity stripe. Redshirt junior forward/center Vernon Macklin (Portsmouth, Va.) chipped in 12 points, a block and two steals for UF.
Florida exposed Georgia's backcourt with a relentless press. The Bulldogs (9-9, 1-4 SEC) finished with 19 turnovers, most of them in a decisive first half, and UF capitalized with 33 points off UGA turnovers.
Trey Thompkins led Georgia with 24 points and six rebounds. Ricky McPhee added 21 points, most of them coming on five three-pointers.
The Bulldogs trailed by double digits most of the way. They cut the lead to 71-63 with 5:40 remaining, but Florida responded with a flurry that sealed the victory.
Florida will hit the hardwood again Sun., Jan. 31, with a road game against SEC Eastern Division rival Tennessee. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. and will be nationally televised by CBS.
