Mississippi was the only SEC opponent to defeat the Gators in 2009 league play. The Rebels led with a goal from Hannah Weatherly in the 61st minute, but the Gators scored twice to take the lead (Brooke Thigpen/63rd minute and Tahnai Annis/78th minute). Kelsey Breathitt tied the match in the 84th minute to push the match to overtime for the fifth time in the last 10 UF-UM meetings. The Rebels earned their second win in the 15 all-time meetings between the two teams when Abbie Curran put in a header off a free kick in the 102nd minute.
The Gators opened SEC home play Friday with a 7-1 win versus Mississippi State. Scoring came in spurts, as Florida scored three goals (Erika Tymrak, McKenzie Barney and Tahnai Annis) within a four minute span from the 10th to 14th minute. The Gators got a pair of goals within a minute and a half of the second half, as Caroline Triglia turned in her first collegiate goal, followed shortly by Lindsay Thompson's first goal of the evening. The final two Gator goals were the second of the evening for both players – Thompson and Annis. It was the third double-goal match of the collegiate careers for both. With Barney's goal, she now holds sole possession of the Gator record for consecutive home appearances with a goal (8). The previous record of seven was shared by Gator All-Americans Abby Wambach (2001) and Sarah Yohe (1999). The seven goals was the highest offensive output since UF's 7-0 win versus Jacksonville in 2006.
The Rebels split in its opening weekend of SEC play, dropping a 2-0 decision at Alabama and defeating Auburn (ranked No. 25 by Soccer America) 2-1 in a nationally televised match on ESPNU. UM lost 3-0 at No. 20 South Carolina Friday evening. Junior Dylan Jordan leads the Rebels this season with 15 points off of seven goals and one assist. She shares second in the SEC with UF's Annis with seven goals scored in 2010, just one behind the SEC leader, Barney of UF (8). Senior Taylor Cunningham and junior Meredith Snow both appear on the 2010 Preseason All-SEC list. Matthew Mott took over as the Mississippi head coach in May after the only coach in the program's history, Steve Holeman, left to take over the Georgia program. Mott was the University of Texas' top assistant for the last four years.
