Former Virginia swimmer Fran Crippen, the older brother of UF swimmer Teresa Crippen, died on Saturday during a World Cup marathon race in the United Arab Emirates.
Details remain sketchy, but according to multiple reports, Crippen was found unconscious by deep-sea divers near the final buoy of the 10-kilometer race.
Crippen was competing for the United States in the event.
Crippen was named Atlantic Coast Conference swimmer of the year in 2003 and 2004 while at Virginia and he finished third in the 10-kilometer swim at the 2009 World Championships in Rome. According to Swimming World, Crippen was named the Male Open Water Swimmer of the Year by USA Swimming in September.
Earlier this month at the O'Connell center when the Gators hosted Virginia, Teresa Crippen competed against her older sister Claire, a senior at Virginia. Maddy Crippen, the oldest of the four Crippen siblings, was a standout swimmer at Villanova and a member of the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team.
