Wuerffel returning to The Swamp to say thanks
Tuesday, October 5, 2010 | Football, Scott Carter
Former Gators quarterback Danny Wuerffel, the 1996 Heisman Trophy winner, is returning to Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on Saturday night to pay tribute to Florida fans for their support five years ago when Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and Desire Street, a youth organization Wuerffel has coordinated for several years.
Shortly after Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005, Wuerffel made an on-field plea to Gator fans for their support to help rebuild Desire Street and provide assistance to the young inner-city kids the organization supports.
During Saturday night's Florida-LSU game, Wuerffel will share the field with a young man who was with him five years ago during that memorable plea for help. Wuerffel continues to work as director of Desire Street Ministries and remains close to the UF athletic department.
