Today's edition of GatorZone contains a feature on redshirt sophomore McKenzie Barney (Sammamish, Wash./Skyline High School). The GatorZone television show airs Wednesday, Oct. 6 on Sun Sports (Gainesville/Ocala Cox Cable channel 48 or 748) at 5:30 p.m. The show replays on Thursday, Oct. 7 at 12:30 p.m.
Barney is having a career season for the Gators. She currently leads the team in goals (9), points (21) and game winning goals (4). She leads the Southeastern Conference in goals and is tied for the lead in points with Katy Frierson of Auburn. So far this season, Barney has been named SEC Offensive Player of the Week twice, NSCAA Player of the Week, and named to the College360.com Primetime Performers List.
With time winding down in Sunday's 3-0 victory over Mississippi, it looked as if Barney's school-record streak of home appearance with a goal was going to end but she scored in the 90th minute to extend the record to nine. Entering this season, the previous record for consecutive home appearances with a goal (7) was shared by past Gator All-Americans Abby Wambach (2001) and Sarah Yohe (1999).
Next up, Florida travels to the state of Alabama to face the top two teams in the SEC Western Division standings. The weekend begins with a Friday, Oct. 8 match at SEC Western Division leader Alabama (8-2-1, 3-0-1 SEC) and the match airs live on Fox Sports-Florida (Gainesville/Ocala Cox Cable channel 70 or 770) at 8 p.m. (ET). Then UF faces Auburn (8-4, 2-2 SEC) on Sunday, Oct. 10 in a match which airs live on ESPNU (Gainesville/Ocala Cox Cable channel 251) beginning at 3 p.m. (ET).
You can hear the action live on WRUF SportsRadio 850 or on Gainesville/Ocala Cox Cable channel 946 for the Alabama match. Both the Alabama and Auburn matches can be heard live on www.GatorZone.com.
