Florida swimmer Conor Dwyer (Winnetka, Ill.) was named the Counsilman-Hunsaker National Collegiate Male Swimmer of the Week for the week of Oct. 26-Nov. 1, 2010, announced Wednesday by CollegeSwimming.com. The senior captain earned the honor for the second time in his career (Jan. 26, 2010) for his performance in UF's win at conference rival Georgia Oct. 29. The Gators (1-1, 1-0 SEC) defeated the Bulldogs, 170-130, to improve to 59-15-2 all-time against UGA.
“He had an outstanding week last week and it was certainly well deserved,” head coach Gregg Troy said. “Conor continues to impress us with his intensity.”
Dwyer won three individual events at Georgia, while helping lead the Orange and Blue to another first-place finish in relay competition. The Winnetka, Ill., native's time of 9:00.48 in the 1,000-yard freestyle and NCAA provisional finish of 4:25.26 in the 500 free marked the fastest times in the NCAA this year in the two events, while his winning time of 1:37.77 in the 200 free also was a NCAA “B” cut. The 2010 NCAA and SEC Male Swimmer of the Year also swam on the 400 free relay squad that clocked the nation's fastest time in the event this year with a NCAA provisional mark of 2:59.27, giving him a team-best 15 events this season (10 individual, five relays).
Yesterday, the 2010-11 U.S. National Team member became the first Gator since Olympic gold medalist Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.) in 2004-05 to win SEC Male Swimmer of the Week twice in the same season.
The Gator men's team returns to action tomorrow, Nov. 4, as the Orange and Blue travel to Baton Rouge, La., to take on LSU in another SEC road meet. Meet time is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET. Fans are encouraged to follow the swimming and diving program on Twitter or Facebook.
