Wednesday, November 3, 2010 | Women's Tennis
The University of Florida women's tennis team will have strong representation at the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, which will be held Nov. 4-7 at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. Columbia University serves as host of the event.
Freshman Alex Cercone (Seminole, Fla.), freshman Olivia Janowicz (Palm Bay, Fla.), sophomore Allie Will (Boca Raton) and freshman Sofie Oyen (Leopoldsburg, Belgium) travel to New York to compete for an individual national title.
The field consists of a 32-player singles draw and a 16-team doubles event, with consolation action for both. This is the second of the individual national championships played during the collegiate season, with the third and final one being the NCAAs in May.
Allie Will earned a spot in both the singles and doubles draws, being awarded an automatic and the No. 6 seed in the singles event based on her No. 5 national ranking, while teaming with Sofie Oyen to capture the USTA/ITA Southeast Region doubles title last week to earn a spot in the doubles tournament. Will is 6-1 this season, sporting a 54-6 career singles mark, and has won six consecutive matches entering the event. Oyen and Will are 7-1 as a doubles pair, having won their last seven decisions.
Janowicz topped fellow classmate and roommate Cercone 6-3, 7-5 to win the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional and capture her first collegiate singles title which comes with an automatic berth into the national event.
Cercone received a wildcard into the 32-player tournament based on her outstanding Fall results. Not only was she a finalists at the Regional, but she has compiled an impressive 11-4 singles record, including a 6-1 record against nationally-ranked opponents.
Janowicz rides a six-match winning streak into the national tournament, with a pair of victories against ranked foes and an 8-1 overall record.
The remainder of the team not traveling to New York will remain in Gainesville and play host to the annual Gator Fall Classic, which will be held Nov. 5-7 at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex. Admission to all regular-season home events is FREE!
The three-day event features athletes from Florida, South Florida, Florida State and FIU. Action begins on Friday at 3 p.m., on Saturday at 9 a.m. and on Sunday at 8 a.m.
This is the final weekend of play on the fall tennis schedule.
