Women's Tennis Hosts Annual Gator Fall Classic, Nov. 5-7
Thursday, November 4, 2010 | Women's Tennis
The University of Florida women's tennis team plays host this weekend to the Gator Fall Classic, the only home appearance for the squad during its fall schedule. Action begins Friday at 3 p.m. at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex and admission is free.
Four members of the 2010-11 team earned a spot in the USTA-ITA National Indoor Championships being played this weekend, but four remain in Gainesville to compete in the annual Gator Fall Classic against other student-athletes from Florida International, Florida State and South Florida.
Claire Bartlett (Chattanooga, Tenn.), Brittany Borsanyi (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.), Caroline Hitimana (Waterloo, Belgium) and Joanna Mather (Duluth, Ga.) are set to represent Florida this weekend on its home courts.
Saturday's action will begin at 9 a.m., with Sunday's play getting underway at 8 a.m.
Gator Fall Classic Format
• Athletes will be assigned to play a singles match in one of six different flights. A win playing a Flight 1 or 2 match results in 3 points, a win in Flight 3 or 4 is worth 2 points and a victory in Flight 5 or below will be one point. The player with the most points at the end of the weekend will be declared the singles champion. Competitors are allowed to play in different flights each day.
• A similar format will be followed for crowning the doubles champion. The winner, however, will be an individual and not a doubles team, since schools are allowed to pair different athletes each day in the doubles competition.
• Every morning, each school will submit a list of the athletes it wants to compete in a specific flight, so pairings will not be available until 30 minutes prior to the start of action.
• For weather-related delays, call 352-375-4683, ext. 3044
• Final results will be posted to the women's tennis home page on GatorZone.com at the end of each day of play
