Preston Tucker Named To CB360 Weekly Honor Roll
Wednesday, March 24, 2010 | Baseball
University of Florida sophomore Preston Tucker (Tampa, Fla.) was named to the Primetime Performer Weekly Honor Roll produced by CollegeBaseball360.com on Wednesday. The first baseman led the Gators (16-3/3-0 SEC) with a .400 (8-for-20) average, 11 RBI, six runs, four homers and a slugging percentage of 1.050 over five wins last week. In addition, he homered in four-consecutive games, the longest stretch by a UF player since Matt LaPorta set a school record by hitting a round-tripper in five-straight games between March 24 and April 1, 2007.
Tucker batted .417 (5-for-12) with four RBI and scored four runs during Florida's sweep of Mississippi State to start league action. On Sunday, he extended his hitting streak to eight games with an eighth-inning single and freshman Austin Maddox (Jacksonville, Fla.) followed with a three-run homer to snap a 1-1 tie en route to a 4-1 Gator victory.
The slugger launched a game-tying solo shot in the sixth and poked a two-run double in the seventh during Florida's 5-4 triumph on Saturday after opening SEC play by going 2-for-4 with two runs and a solo homer in UF's 7-2 win on Friday.
Last Tuesday, Tucker went 2-for-3 and tallied four RBI as the Gators evened their season series against No. 4 Florida State with an 8-5 triumph. He homered in the third, had a sacrifice fly in the fourth, drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth and roped a two-out RBI single in the seventh. The Plant High School product had driven in three runs and clubbed a two-run homer in the 9-3 victory over Army the previous night.
On the season, Tucker leads UF with a .389 batting average and is second on the club in RBI (19), runs (18), doubles (five) and homers (four).
Tucker was part of CollegeBaseball360.com's fifth group of Primetime Performers for action from March 15-21. Saint Louis senior first baseman Danny Brock was named the Primetime Player of the Week, while Alabama sophomore left-hander Adam Morgan was the CB360 Primetime Pitcher of the Week.
The other 13 members of the CB360 Primetime Performer Weekly Honor Roll included: Utah sophomore catcher C.J. Cron, Arkansas junior outfielder/right-hander Brett Eibner, Ball State right-handed reliever Perci Garner, Maryland first baseman/closer Dan Gentzler, Stanford junior catcher Zach Jones, LSU sophomore left-hander Chris Matulis, Florida State junior outfielder/closer Mike McGee, Ole Miss left-hander Drew Pomeranz, Fordham fifth-year senior designated hitter Angelo Ponte, Arizona freshman outfielder Robert Refsnyder, High Point junior outfielder Nate Roberts, San Diego junior shortstop Tony Strazzard and Charlotte senior catcher Zane Williams.
The 16 honorees include three two-way players (RHP/RF; CF/RHP; 1B/RHP), four other pitchers (three of them lefties), three catchers, two first basemen, a shortstop, left fielder, right fielder and designated hitter. The selections feature a fifth-year senior, three seniors, seven juniors, four sophomores and a freshman. Three of the players are Florida natives and two are Arizona products, with all of the others coming from different home states: California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and Utah.
The CB360 Primetime Performer honors various players based on any/all of the following “primetime” criteria (i.e. not solely based on raw stats):
• Must have been playing for a CB360 top-50 team (in the Composite National Rankings) or against such a top-level opponent, or performed a high level in a game that could be key to a team's conference/NCAA postseason qualification.
• Involved in clutch performances, such as late game-winning hits, noteworthy comebacks, game-changing plays, team leadership, etc.
• Performing at a top level against a team rated highly nationally (or within its conference), with bonus consideration given for key performances away from home field.
• Overcoming adversity or extreme circumstances (for the team and/or individual).
