Women's Golf Travels to Athens for Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic
Thursday, March 25, 2010 | Women's Golf
The 10th-ranked University of Florida women's golf team will travel to Athens, Ga. for the Liz Murphy Collegiate Classic, hosted by the University of Georgia. The Gators will play 18 holes a day from Friday to Sunday. The tournament is being held at the University of Georgia Golf Course.
The last time the Gators won the Liz Murphey was in 2002 when Florida took home the team title and Jeanne Cho won the individual crown. Head coach Jan Dowling hopes that her lineup of golfers can claim their second tournament win of the season and give the squad momentum heading into the SunTrust Gator Women's Golf Invitational.
Sophomore Marika Lendl (Bradenton, Fla.) is making her sixth-straight appearance for the Gators this season and will lead a UF lineup consisting of two sophomores and three freshmen. Newcomer Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines) and sophomore Evan Jensen (Belleair, Fla.) are both coming off solid showings at the Auburn Invitational and will look to continue their momentum in Athens. Freshman Megan Pak (Bradenton, Fla.) will be making her first appearance as a member of the Florida lineup this weekend, as she made her collegiate debut as an individual at the JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational. Fellow freshman Isabelle Lendl (Bradenton, Fla.) will round out the lineup for Florida. Lendl is currently leading the team with a season stroke average of 73.8 through 18 rounds of play.
The Gators will face tough competition in Athens, as they will compete against a 22-team field which boasts 14 teams in Golfweek's top-50. No. 3 Auburn and No. 6 Duke join UF as the only teams featured in the top-10. The Liz Murphey should prove to be a good preview for what the Gators will see in the future as nine teams competing will be at the SEC Championship in mid-April and four of the same teams will travel to Gainesville for the SunTrust Gator Women's Golf Invitational.
The first Gator to tee off for the opening round will do so at 9 a.m. ET. Live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com or www.GatorZone.com.
