Tuesday, March 30, 2010 | Gymnastics
The University of Florida gymnastics freshmen class is part of a segment that airs Wednesday, March 31 on the SEC Weekly show. The show airs on ESPNU (Channel 251 on Gainesville/Ocala Cox Cable) at 7:30 p.m. ET.
The feature focuses on the Gator's five-member freshman class. The class is No. 1 on CollegeGymFans.com's ranking of recruiting classes, and includes Ashan?e Dickerson, Liz Green, Marissa King, Dali Lemezan and Randy Stageberg.
The freshman class has certainly played a big role in the team's success so far this season, leading the team to a No. 4 national ranking. The Gators claimed the program's seventh Southeastern Conference Championship last Saturday in Jacksonville. Just over half (50.75%) of the routines performed by Gators in 2010 have come from its freshmen class.
Dickerson and King make up the 2010 Freshman All-SEC team. Dickerson was named SEC Freshman of the Year and is an All-SEC first team member. She was named the SEC Gymnast of the Week once (Feb. 23) and SEC Freshman Gymnast of the Week four times (Jan. 19, 26, Feb. 2 and March 2). King was named to the All-SEC second team and has won three SEC Freshman of the Week honors herself (Feb. 23, March 9, and March 16). Combined, they have claimed seven of the possible 11 SEC Freshman Gymnast of the Week honors.
Lemezan has led off the Gator vault lineup for all but one meet and owns a collegiate-best vault mark of 9.90. Stageberg owns a top mark of 9.875 for both of the events she has competed this season - balance beam and floor exercise. Green owns a collegiate-best of 9.925 for beam and 9.875 for floor. She has claimed at least a share of four beam titles this season.
Next up, No. 4 Florida competes in the NCAA North Central Region Championships in Salt Lake City, Utah, on April 10. A top-two team finish sends Florida back home to the NCAA Championships, which are set for April 22-24 in the Stephen C. O'Connell Center.
