Thursday, April 1, 2010 | Women's Tennis
The third-ranked University of Florida women's tennis team plays its final two regular-season home matches this weekend, beginning with Friday's 5 p.m. outing against No. 24 Vanderbilt at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex, where admission is free.
Free pizza slices will be distributed to the first 150 fans.
The Gators carry a nine-match win streak into Friday's contest against the Commodores and hold a share of the lead in the Southeastern Conference race with a 6-0 record in league play, as well as a 16-2 mark overall.
Vanderbilt (9-6, 4-2 SEC) has won its last two matches and is led by senior Catherine Newman, who is one of three Commodores ranked among the top 85 singles players in the country. Vanderbilt also sports a pair of nationally-ranked doubles teams.
Three Gators are ranked in the current singles rankings, with freshman Allie Will (Boca Raton, Fla.) listed at No. 9, freshman Lauren Embree (Marco Island, Fla.) at No. 14 and senior Marrit Boonstra (Groningen, The Netherlands) at No. 79. On the doubles court, Boonstra and Will are ranked as the nation's No. 5 pair, while Embree and senior Anastasia Revzina (Moscow, Russia) are No. 35.
“We always seem to play classic matches against Vanderbilt. They tend to play their best tennis against us and we expect nothing short of that on Friday,” UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “It will be an evening match under the lights, which we really like, and hopefully there will be a decent crowd on hand. We're really looking forward to playing our final two events at home and send Anastasia and Marrit off with a bang.”
Florida wraps up its regular-season home schedule on Sunday, when the team plays host to Kentucky beginning at Noon.
