University of Florida right-hander Hudson Randall (Atlanta, Ga.) was chosen as the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week for the second time this season on Monday after turning in a career-best effort in the Gators' rubber-game victory over Eastern Division rival Tennessee on Sunday afternoon.
Randall led UF to its first series victory in Knoxville since 2002 by working a career-high eight innings in the finale and head coach Kevin O'Sullivan's squad parlayed a seven-run outburst in the sixth inning into a 9-1 triumph. The rookie righty held the Vols hitless until a leadoff single in bottom of the sixth and matched his career high of six strikeouts to collect his first SEC win.
Randall allowed four singles and one run without issuing any walks and retired the first eight batters of the game, which was scoreless into the sixth. On the season, he is 3-3 with a 3.98 earned run average and has notched 30 K in 40.2 innings.
The Dunwoody High School product was previously named the SEC's Freshman of the Week on March 1, while shortstop Nolan Fontana (Winter Garden, Fla.) (March 8) and left-hander/designated hitter Brian Johnson (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) (April 5) have also received the accolade.
No. 7 Florida (23-8/8-4 SEC) returns to action at No. 6 Florida State (25-7/10-5 ACC) on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Seminoles have claimed two of the three regular-season meetings, winning 10-5 in Tampa on March 2 and 7-2 in Jacksonville on March 30. The Gators posted an 8-5 victory at McKethan Stadium on March 16.
