University of Florida softball head coach Tim Walton signed a fourth player to the 2010-11 class, Plantation, Fla., native Chelsea Howell. Howell joins Cheyenne Coyle (West Hills, Calif.), Kasey Fagan (Dunnellon, Fla.) and Hannah Rogers (Winter Haven, Fla.), who signed National Letters of Intent in the fall.
“We're excited to add Chelsea to our team,&rldquo; Walton said. “She's an accomplished winner at the high school and travel ball levels. She is very versatile and athletic and will certainly make our team better.”
Howell, a 5-foot-5-inch utility player at American Heritage High School, helped her team to two Class 3A State Championships in 2008 and 2009 and three district titles. In 2009, she was named Broward County Player of the Year by the Orlando Sun Sentinel and was a first team all-state honoree. She tallied a .600 batting clip and stole over 30 bases. She was named Most Outstanding Offensive Player at American Heritage. She is a two-time first-team all-county player and earned honorable mention her freshman season. This season, Howell is batting .477 with a .541 on-base percentage and 19 stole bases through 20 games, as the Patriots are 17-3.
Howell also plays travel ball for the Gold Coast Hurricanes coached by Marty Cooper with incoming Gator Hannah Rogers. The Hurricanes were Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA) National Champions in 2008 and finished second at the Gold Nationals in 2009. Current juniors Stephanie Brombacher (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and Tiffany DeFelice (Coral Springs, Fla.) are graduates of American Heritage and Howell played with other UF players, including sophomore Michelle Moultrie (Jacksonville, Fla.) and freshmen Samantha Holle (Tampa, Fla.) and Kelsey Horton (Valrico, Fla.).
