University of Florida men's golf coach Buddy Alexander announced the addition of two golfers on Friday. Santiago Gavino (Austin, Texas) and Alex Slaton (Gainesville, Fla.) have both signed a National Letter of Intent to continue their academic and golf careers at the University of Florida.
Gavino has extensive international golf experience and is a member of the Mexican Amateur Team. He was the runner up at the 2009 Toyota Junior Golf World Cup, carding a nine-under 275. Gavino helped lead Mexico to a fifth-place finish at the event. He also added a fourth-place finish at the Mexican International Amateur.
“Santiago is a big, powerful man with unlimited potential,” said Alexander. “He is really long and has done nice things in international competition. We are excited to have him at Florida.”
Slaton has experienced success at the junior level of late, most recently winning the AJGA Preseason Junior in Ocala following a third-place finish at the 15th Annual Innisbrook Easter Classic in early April. In February, he finished third at the Florida Junior Tour Southwood Golf Club event.
“Alex was out of golf for a year due to injury,” Alexander said. “But we have had our eye on him for a while. He has been playing well lately and I think he is a great addition to the University of Florida men's golf program.”
In his senior year, Slaton led Buchholz High School to a second-place finish at both the Class 2A District 3 State Tournament and the Class 2A Region 2 State Tournament. The squad posted a 55-20 team record and Slaton was named to the First Team Gainesville Sun All-Area team.
