Aaron Hernandez Drafted by the New England Patriots
Saturday, April 24, 2010 | Football
Former UF tight end Aaron Hernandez (Bristol, Conn.) has been selected by the New England Patriots in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft.
Hernandez is the eighth Gator taken in this year's draft, marking the eighth time in school history that UF has had eight players selected in a single draft. That figure also leads the nation in this year's draft.
Hernandez won the 2009 John Mackey Award as the country's top tight end after he led the nation in receptions (68) and receiving yards (850) by a tight end. He was a Sporting News and AP first-team All-American and earned first-team All-SEC honors from the coaches, AP and Sporting News.
Hernandez is the third Gator selected by the Patriots in this year's draft, following defensive end Jermaine Cunningham and linebacker Brandon Spikes, who were both selected in the second round. The last time a single NFL team took three or more Florida players in the NFL Draft was 2003, when the Chicago Bears selected four Gators.
