Two Florida Lacrosse Players Earn Weekly Honors

University of Florida freshmen Ashley Bruns (Ellicott City, Md.) and Sam Farrell (Millersville, Md.) were honored on Monday for their performances last week against Oregon and No. 14 Penn State. Bruns was named the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Player of the Week as well as the rookie of the week by WomensLax.com, WomensLacrosse.com and the American Lacrosse Conference. Farrell earned the team's first Defensive Player of the Week award from the ALC.
Florida (8-4, 1-2 ALC) had wins over Oregon and No. 14 Penn State last week. The win over PSU marked the first conference win in program history for the Gators and helped them earn their first national ranking (No. 20 in this week's Inside Lacrosse poll).
Bruns was a key factor in both wins last week. She scored two goals and had an assist in the first 10 minutes against Penn State and helped UF jump out to a 4-0 lead. She added three more goals and another assist as Florida won 13-11. She also had three goals and three assists in Florida's win over Oregon last Tuesday. Bruns leads the team and ranks first in the ALC in scoring with 38 goals and 28 assists on the season.
Last week against Oregon, Farrell had the task of marking Jana Drummond, who entered the game with 30 goals on the season. Farrell held Drummond to just one goal on two shots and the Gators won 16-6. In Florida's first ALC win over Penn State, Farrell marked the Nittany Lions' Jen Steadman, who was second on the team with 23 points entering the contest. Farrell held Steadman to no shots on Saturday.
The Gators travel to upstate New York this weekend to take on Le Moyne (Friday, 4 p.m.) and Colgate (Sunday, 12 p.m.). Fans can get scoring updates by following GatorZoneLax on Twitter.
