Men's Track and Field Rockets to No. 1
Tuesday, May 18, 2010 | Track and Field
On the strength of its first Southeastern Conference outdoor title since 1987, the University of Florida men's track and field team has rocketed to No. 1 in the latest United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll, the New Orleans-based organization announced Tuesday.
The Gator men, ranked No. 3 heading into the league championships, return to the nation's top spot for the first time since the April 20 poll. Florida, which was the preseason No. 1 outdoors, will be the nation's top-ranked team for the fourth time in seven weeks in the 2010 outdoor campaign. The Florida women, who entered the conference meet ranked No. 10 and placed second at the league championships, have moved up to the No. 6 spot in the national women's poll.
Both the men's and women's programs have been ranked among the nation's top 10 all season (indoors and outdoors).
That Florida's men captured their first SEC outdoor championship since 1987 is no small accomplishment, considering that the league features four teams in this week's top 10 and nine teams among the men's national top-25 poll. The Gator women are one of four SEC teams ranked in the women's national top 25.
Florida returns to action May 27-29, when it travels to Greensboro, N.C., to participate in the NCAA Preliminary Rounds at Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T University.
