Florida freshman shortstop Nolan Fontana (Winter Garden, Fla.) has been invited to the 2010 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Trials set for July 5-11 at the National Training Complex in Cary, N.C. Fontana will be fighting for a spot on the final 22-man roster that will be selected on Sunday, July 11. The team will then tour across the United States, with the summer season culminating on July 30-Aug. 7 at the FISU World University Baseball Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
Fontana has started all 42 games at shortstop in his rookie campaign for the Orange and Blue and has committed just one error in 191 chances for a .995 fielding percentage. He leads the No. 6 Gators (31-11/15-6 SEC) with 34 walks, is second in runs (34) and third in on-base percentage (.429). The West Orange High School product is fourth on the squad with a .280 average and has 15 RBI, eight doubles and six stolen bases.
During UF's recent series triumph over No. 4 Arkansas, its first over the Hogs since 2006, Fontana was the team's top hitter with a .364 (4-for-11) clip and scored a team-best four runs. He went 2-for-4 with two runs and a double in each of the first two games. This past Saturday, he went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks as Florida clinched the series against defending national champion No. 9 LSU with a 7-3 win. Fontana hit .273 (3-for-11) and was perfect in the field as the head coach Kevin O'Sullivan's squad registered its first sweep of the Tigers since 1996.
The Gators return to action on Tuesday night against Bethune-Cookman (29-18/15-0 MEAC) at McKethan Stadium. UF then heads to Tuscaloosa for a three-game series at Alabama (28-17/9-12 SEC) starting on Friday night from Sewell-Thomas Stadium.
