Monday, May 31, 2010 | Lacrosse
University of Florida freshmen lacrosse players Ashley Bruns (Ellicott City, Md.) and Brittany Dashiell (Bel Air, Md.) were named to the 2010 All-Rookie Squad, announced over the weekend by WomensLacrosse.com. In addition, Bruns was named the 2010 Rookie of the Year.
The Gators burst onto the lacrosse season in 2010, earning a top-20 ranking during the season and finishing with three wins over ranked opponents. They became just the sixth team in NCAA Division I women's lacrosse history to earn at least 10 wins in their inaugural season.
Bruns led all freshmen nationally in total points and points per game (4.39), ranking in the top 15 nationally among all players in both categories. She also ranked among the top three freshmen in the nation in goals (48) and assists (31), leading the Gators in both categories. Bruns was also named Rookie of the Year by WomensLax.com and the American Lacrosse Conference and was an ALC Second Team selection.
Dashiell, a team captain for the 2010 season, was a major factor in the midfield for the Gators. She scored at least one goal in each of the first 15 games and had 26 on the season. She led the team in draw controls (61), ground balls (38) and caused turnovers (17). Dashiell was also an ALC Second Team selection.
