Freshman attacker Ashley Bruns (Ellicott City, Md.) was named the 2010 American Lacrosse Conference Rookie of the Year, announced Tuesday by the league office. In addition, Bruns joins teammates Brittany Dashiell (Bel Air, Md.) and Jamie Reeg (Atlantis, Fla.) as selections on the ALC Second Team.
“I'm so proud of all three of these girls,” said head coach Amanda O'Leary. “They've worked so hard this season and this is a big honor for each of them. They are very deserving and they have each played a big part in the success we've had this year.”
Bruns has been the catalyst for the Florida offense in their inaugural season, leading the team in goals (44) and assists (30). She ranks second in the conference in scoring and seventh nationally with 4.63 points per game. She also ranks second in the conference in assists per game (1.88) and fourth in goals per game (2.75). She was selected as the National Player of the Week on April 5 following her performance against Oregon and No. 14 Penn State. Bruns was selected as the ALC Rookie of the Week three times this season and was named the national Rookie of the Week on two occasions.
Dashiell, a team captain for the 2010 season, has been a major factor in the midfield this year. She scored at least one goal in each of the first 15 games and has 25 on the season. Dashiell ranks third in the conference in draw controls per game (3.19) and fourth in ground balls per game (2.25). She also leads the team with 15 caused turnovers. She was named the ALC Co-Rookie of the Week after totaling six goals, seven draw controls, two ground balls and a caused turnover in games against La Salle and North Carolina.
Reeg has appeared in every game this season with 15 starts for a Florida defense that ranks third in the ALC in team defense (9.71 goals allowed per game). She ranks second on the team with 28 ground balls and also has 15 draw controls and 11 caused turnovers. Reeg has had at least one ground ball in nine-straight games, including a season-high five ground balls against Oregon. Her lone goal of the season came at No. 17 Ohio State.
The Gators are currently preparing for the upcoming ALC Tournament, which begins Thursday in Columbus, Ohio. Florida will face No. 20 Johns Hopkins in the opening round at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, with the winner advancing to play No. 10 Vanderbilt on Friday in the semifinal round.
