Three Baseball Players Earn Additional Freshman All-America Honors
Monday, June 14, 2010 | Baseball
The trio of Florida left-hander/designated hitter Brian Johnson (Cocoa Beach, Fla.), third baseman Austin Maddox (Jacksonville, Fla.) and right-hander Hudson Randall (Atlanta, Ga.) was named to the 2010 Pro-Line Athletic National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Freshman All-American Team on Monday. Each player had been previously been named to the 2010 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America Team chosen by Collegiate Baseball newspaper last week.
A second-team honoree, Johnson made the SEC's All-Freshman Team as both a starting pitcher and at designated hitter. He has been the Gators' DH in 26 games and is batting .413 (33-for-80) with 19 RBI, 13 runs, nine walks, five doubles, four homers and two grand slams. Johnson was named the SEC Freshman of the Week on April 5 and again on May 3 and was chosen to the Watch List for the John Olerud Award presented to the nation's best two-way player. The dual threat was tabbed as the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Gainesville Regional after going 5-for-8 (.625) at the plate and twirling seven shutout innings in the championship game. Johnson went 3-for-5 with a leadoff homer in the third inning in the second meeting with FAU and was 2-for-3 with his first career triple in the win over Oregon State. He hit a team-high .429 (3-for-7) in the NCAA Gainesville Super Regional sweep of Miami (Fla.) and drove in three runs.
A first-team pick who was chosen as the SEC's Freshman of the Year, Maddox earned second-team All-SEC recognition and was named to the league's All-Freshman Team. He has started 61 games in four differ?ent spots - third base (28), designated hitter (18), first base (14) and catcher (1). The slugger is hitting .333 and holds the top spot in RBI (71), multi-RBI games (21), homers (17), hit-by-pitches (eight) and sac?rifice flies (five), in addition to scoring 48 runs and poking 16 doubles. Maddox hit .333 (5-for-15) with three runs and a couple of RBI during the Gators' march through their own Regional. He delivered a 3-for-5 effort in the win over Oregon State that featured a two-out, two-run single in the third inning and opened the tourney by going 2-for-5 and scored twice versus Bethune-Cookman. Last Saturday night, Maddox roped an RBI double in the 10th that brought across classmate Nolan Fontana (Winter Garden, Fla.) with what proved to be the winning run in the 4-3 win over UM that sent Florida to Omaha for the first time since 2005.
Another member of the SEC All-Freshman Team who was a second-team selection by the NCBWA, Randall earned Freshman of the Week twice, March 1 and April 12, and led the league with a 2.63 ERA in conference games. In 10 SEC starts, the righty was 4-2 and posted victories over Tennessee, No. 4 Arkansas, No. 9 LSU and Alabama. Over a team-high 16 starts, Randall has an 8-3 mark with a 2.95 ERA and is second on the club with 68 strikeouts. The righty had a career-high 10 strikeouts without issuing any walks over 7.1 innings to defeat B-CU and was chosen to the All-Tournament Team. In his last outing, Randall held Miami (Fla.) scoreless into the seventh inning, giving up three hits and two runs with five strikeouts.
The 2010 Pro-Line Athletic NCBWA Freshman All-American Team features players from 13 conferences and six conference championship teams. The two All-American squads are also made up of 10 conference “Rookie of the Year” winners.
Florida placed the most players on the team with three players (overall) on the two teams, while 24 schools placed at least one player on the teams. Florida placed one player on the first team and two on the second team. Arizona State, Cal State Fullerton, Jacksonville, Rutgers and St. John's also each placed two players on the teams.
The BIG EAST, Big 12 and Pac-10 placed three players apiece on the first team, while the Southeastern Conference placed two players on the first team. The Pac-10 and SEC each had five members on the first and second teams, the BIG EAST and the Big 12 had four and the Atlantic Sun had three selections apiece on the teams.
The 2010 NCBWA National Freshman Player of the Year and National Freshman Pitcher of the Year will be announced tomorrow.
