Baseball's Alex Panteliodis Named To CB360 Weekly Honor Roll
Wednesday, June 16, 2010 | Baseball
University of Florida sophomore left-hander Alex Panteliodis (Tampa, Fla.) was named to the Primetime Performer Weekly Honor Roll produced by CollegeBaseball360.com on Wednesday. This marks the third time this year that the southpaw has earned the accolade, as he was recognized on March 9 and April 6 following regular-season series against Miami (Fla.) and Vanderbilt, respectively.
In the opener of the best-of-three NCAA Gainesville Super Regional last Friday night, Panteliodis went the distance for his first career complete game and established a personal best with 12 strikeouts as the Gators defeated Miami (Fla.), 7-2.
Panteliodis (11-2) retired the final 14 Hurricane hitters of the contest and yielded three hits to register UF's first complete game since Stephen Locke accomplished the feat against Alabama on May 10, 2008. The lefty's effort was the first complete game by a Gator pitcher in the NCAA Tournament since Tommy Boss twirled nine innings in an 8-1 triumph over Florida State in Game 1 of the NCAA Gainesville Super Regional on June 10, 2005.
In 17 appearances this season, including 15 starts, Panteliodis is 11-2 with a 3.26 earned run average and leads the pitching staff with 80 strikeouts. His total of 11 victories is the most by a Gator since Justin Hoyman went 11-2 in 2004. In his three postseason starts, Panteliodis is 3-0 with a 3.05 ERA. He kept UF alive at the SEC Tournament by allowing four hits and three runs over 6.2 innings in a 5-4 triumph over No. 12 Arkansas on May 27, then totaled eight strikeouts over five innings during a 10-2 conquest of Oregon State in a winner's bracket contest of the NCAA Gainesville Regional on June 5.
Panteliodis was part of CollegeBaseball360.com's 17th group of Primetime Performers for NCAA Super Regionals action. Oklahoma cleanup hitter Cody Reine was named the Primetime Player of the Week, while TCU sophomore right-hander Kyle Wingler was the CB360 Primetime Pitcher of the Week.
The CB360 Primetime Performer honors various players based on any/all of the following “primetime” criteria (i.e. not solely based on raw stats):
• Must have been playing for or against a CB360 top-50 team (in the Composite National Rankings) or performed a high level in games that could be key to a team's conference/NCAA postseason qualification; made significant contribution to team's postseason positioning (single-game wins, “quality” wins, series wins, road wins, etc.).
• Involved in clutch performances, such as late game-winning hits, noteworthy comebacks, game-changing plays, team leadership, key defensive efforts, etc.
• Performed at a top level against a team rated highly nationally (or within its conference), with bonus consideration given for key performances away from home field and vs. traditional rivals.
• Overcame adversity or extreme circumstances (for the team and/or individual).
• Any accomplishment that is rare, historic, record-setting, etc., on a national level.
