Gators To Face UCF In Orlando At New Amway Arena
Friday, June 18, 2010 | Men's Basketball
For the second time, the University of Florida will play in the first college event at a new arena in downtown Orlando. Florida Citrus Sports announced Thursday that Florida and UCF will face one another at the new Amway Arena on Dec. 1.
The Gators played in the first collegiate event at the current Amway Arena on Dec. 4, 1989 vs. Stanford. Now, the Gators will play the first collegiate event at the $380 million Amway Arena in downtown Orlando.
The game will be a match-up of friends, as UCF is coached by long-time Billy Donovan assistant Donnie Jones, an assistant at UF from 1996-2007, and the Associate Head Coach on the Gators' second national title team in 2007.
Florida is 9-0 all-time against UCF, although the two teams have never met in Orlando. Florida is 7-0 against the Knights in Gainesville, and they have played twice in the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Coliseum, most recently in 2008, with UF winning both times.
The Gators will be making their first appearance in Orlando since Nov. 30, 2008 when they defeated Missouri-Kansas City at Amway Arena.
