University of Florida golfer Tyson Alexander (Gainesville, Fla.) provided Team USA with a key point in today's Palmer Cup play at the Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland.
The Palmer Cup is a Ryder-cup style tournament that pits the top American and European collegiate golfers. The eight-member U.S. team is made up of the nation's top collegiate players.
Team USA claimed its third and final singles victory Friday with Alexander's 2 and 1 triumph against Patrick Spraggs. Spraggs took an early lead after claiming Nos. 2 and 3. Alexander won the fifth, seventh and eighth to take a 1-up advantage. Spraggs evened the match after a birdie on No. 12 and retook the lead after No. 14. Alexander won the next three holes for the 2 and 1 win. The U.S. leads Europe 9-7 heading into Saturday's final day of action.
'The Alexander match was pivotal to make sure that we kept our lead,” said United States Head Coach Chris Zambri. “Tyson was 1-down going into the 15th tee. For him to get a full point was crucial for us. Today was interesting only because it seemed like we were down quite a bit most of the day. I feel fortunate that we picked up three points. It looks like there is a lot of good golf being played, so even though we had some guys that didn't win their matches everybody is playing pretty well. I think that's a testament to the tournament and college golf that there are so many good players.”
In the first day of action at the Palmer Cup, Alexander won both his four-ball and foursome matches helping Team USA take a 6-2 lead over Team Europe. For the final round of the Palmer Cup, Alexander will face Andrea Pavan in singles match play. Pavan, a native of Italy, finished his collegiate career at Texas A&M earlier this month.
In 2010, Alexander was a PING All-America honorable mention selection. He also was named to the All-Southeastern Conference first team and made his second consecutive year appearance on the PING All-Region Team. The senior was part of the Gator team that finished tied for 11th at the NCAA Championships.
Team United States currently leads Team Europe 9-7. More information on the Palmer Cup can be found at www.PalmerCup.org.
