Florida Teams Post High Academic Progress Rates in NCAA Report
Friday, June 4, 2010 | General
The University of Florida athletic teams received high marks on NCAA's Academic Progress Rate data released today.
APR data, which is based on the eligibility of each student athlete on scholarship as well as their retention, judges the academic performance of all sports teams in a school over a four-year period.
The Gator volleyball team was the highest scoring Florida team ranking in the 90th to 100th percentile with a score of 995 points. In May, the volleyball team was one of 55 Division I women's volleyball programs to receive public recognition from the NCAA for its APR. Florida's softball team also scored well with a score of 990 points putting the team in the 80th to 90th percentile.
The data also shows that Florida football team, which received 971 points, is significantly above the national average of 944 points and is also within the 80th to 90th percentile. The data shows that Florida's scores are up five points from last year's APR for Division I football. The overall multi-year Division I APR is 967, which is up three points from last year.
“The Academic Progress Report released today shows that our student-athletes are focused on the classroom as well as the athletic arena,” said UF athletic director Jeremy Foley. “Florida fans should take pride that every single Gator team is many points above the NCAA multi-year benchmark. Receiving a University of Florida degree is our most important mission. This report shows our student-athletes and coaches share that view.”
Teams scoring lower than a 925 can face penalties from the NCAA, such as scholarship losses, and restrictions on competition and practice.
"Division I student-athletes and their teams continue to make steady academic progress," said NCAA Interim President Jim Isch. "The report cards keep getting better and better for nearly all teams and all schools."
No Florida sports team came within 15 points of the 925 point cutoff.
