Gator Swimmers Compete in Summer USA Swimming Event

Eight different current and former Gators won individual events while swimming for their club teams this past weekend at the three-day 2010 USA Swimming Southern Zone Southern Sectional Championships at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center. In addition, three different relay teams representing Gators past and present also took home titles. The meet took place in a long-course meter format.
For the women, three current Gators took home individual wins. Swimming for the Gator Swim Club, Sarra Lajnef (Tunis, Tunisia) provided the Gators representation in the breaststroke, capturing the 100 and 200 breast events with times of 1:13.94 and 2:34.76, respectively. Also competing for GSC, Jemma Lowe (Hartlepool, England) triumphed in the 200 fly with a time of 2:14.95. Sarah Bateman (Orlando, Fla.), swimming for Patriot Aquatics, claimed the 50 free (26.03) in addition to the 100 fly (1:01.42).
Former Gator and six-time All-American Stephanie Proud (Durham, England) won a women's meet-high three individual events for GSC, bringing home titles in the 800 free (8:45.35), 200 back (2:11.22) and 400 IM (4:52.21). Recently graduated Gemma Spofforth (West Sussex, England), the 2009-10 SEC Female Swimmer of the Year, brought home the 100 back title (1:01.67) swimming for GSC.
On the men's side, Olympic Gold Medalist and Gator great Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.) captured a meet-high four individual titles for Daytona Beach Swimming, including the 100 free (50.56), 200 back (1:58.41), 200 IM (1:59.35) and 400 IM (4:16.91). GSC member and current Gator Sebastien Rousseau (Cape Town, South Africa) won the 100 and 200 Fly, while freshman Jon Nunez (Ft. Myers, Fla.) claimed the 50 free with a time of 23.52 swimming for the Swim Florida club team.
The 200 free relay and 200 medley relay were both won by Gator swimmers competing for GSC. The 200 free relay was won by former Gator All-Americans Bradley Ally (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and Shaune Fraser (George Town, Cayman Islands), along with current Florida swimmers Brett Fraser (George Town, Cayman Islands) and Marco Loughran (London, England). The 200 medley relay was claimed by both Fraser brothers along with current Gator Manuel Rabelo (Villa Clara, Cuba) and former Gator Omar Pinzon (Bogota, Colombia). Additionally, the GSC quartet of Lajnef, Lowe, Spofforth and current Gator Jamie Bohunicky (Gainesville, Fla.) took home the women's 400 medley relay title.
