University of Florida golfers Andres Echavarria (Medellin, Columbia) and Arnond Vongvanij (Bradenton, Fla.) were among 119 Division I athletes named Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars recently by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
This past season, Vongvanij was selected as the 2010 SEC Men's Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He finished second on the team with a stroke average of 72.2 in 32 rounds of play, tallied 17 rounds at or under par, three tournaments at or under par, one top-five finish, and 112 birdies.
Echavarria averaged 73.0 strokes per round, competing in all but one tournament for the Gators. He helped UF qualify for its 10th-straight NCAA Championships appearance after tying for 32nd with a 214 at the NCAA Central Regional.
This is the first honor for Echavarria and Vongvanij, but marks the ninth time in the past 10 years that the Gators have had a player named an All-America scholar. Both athletes also earned a spot on the 2010 PING Division I All-Region Team.
To receive Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America honors, an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least two full years at the collegiate level, participate in 70 percent of his team's competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke-average under 76.0 and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university. For the complete list of scholars, click HERE.
