Gator Gymnastics Team Unveils 2011 Schedule
Saturday, August 14, 2010 | Gymnastics
The University of Florida's 2011 gymnastic team schedule was released today, revealing the challenging competition that the Gator gymnasts will face next spring.
Five of the teams that the Gators will compete against in 2011 advanced to last season's 12-team NCAA Championships' field, with two of those teams proceeding to the 2010 NCAA Super Six team final.
“We want a schedule that will challenge us and this certainly fulfills that goal. Half our meets are duals against programs which advanced to the NCAA Championships. Being tested throughout the season will prepare our team for the key championship portion of the season,” UF Head Coach Rhonda Faehn said.
To start the season, Florida opens up at home on Jan. 7 against a team that saw their 2010 season end in the O'Connell Center at the NCAA Championships', the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Florida's next two opponents are familiar Southeastern Conference foes in Kentucky and LSU. The Gators face Kentucky at home on Jan. 14, and take on LSU in Baton Rouge on Jan. 21. Florida's next meet is its only triangular of the season, when Penn State and NC State visit the O'Connell Center on Jan.28.
To start off February, the Gators face Alabama at home on Feb. 4. In 2010, the Crimson Tide took third in the NCAA Super Six team final. Next the Gators take to the road to face Georgia in Athens on Feb. 11. The Gators return home for their last home meet of the season against Auburn on Feb. 18.
Florida's final three regular-season meets are all on the road, starting with a quad-meet on Feb. 20 in Morgantown, W.Va., against West Virginia, New Hampshire and George Washington. The Gators then travel to Arkansas on Feb. 25 and close out the season at Utah on March 4. Both Arkansas and Utah advanced to the NCAA Championships', with Utah finishing sixth in the Super Six team final.
The championship portion of the season begins with the SEC Championships. The meet, considered the nation's most competitive gymnastics conference meet, is set for March 19. The six NCAA Regional meets will be contested April 2, with the top two teams at each site advancing to the 2011 NCAA Championships, which will make its debut in Cleveland, Ohio.
