Thursday, August 19, 2010 | Women's Swimming & Diving
Former Gator Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.) took home a gold medal for the United States in the men's 200-meter freestyle, while junior All-American Teresa Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa.) broke her own school record and earned a silver medal for the US in the women's 200-meter butterfly, Monday night at day one of the 2010 Mutual of Omaha Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine, Calif.
Lochte won the 200 free with a time of 1:45.30, the fastest time in the world this year. The 24-time All-American at Florida (2002-06) beat out second-place finisher Tae Hwan Park of South Korea by almost a full second (1:46.27). Representing the Cayman Islands, former Gator Shaune Fraser (George Town, Cayman Islands) finished 13th in the event with a time of 1:48.96, while senior Brett Fraser (George Town, Cayman Islands) placed 18th with a time of 1:50.98. Lochte also competed in the men's 100-meter backstroke, where he finished second in the prelims with a time of 53.69. The two-time Olympian did not compete in the finals of the event due to having competed in the 200 free moments earlier.
Sophomore Sebastien Rousseau (Cape Town, South Africa) also represented the Orange and Blue on the men's side, finishing 14th in the men's 200 fly. The South African's time of 1:58.52 marked the fourth-fastest time in school history in the men's event.
Crippen, who set the school record in the 200 fly 13 days ago at US Nationals, broke the record again with a time of 2:06.93. The junior fell three-tenths of a second short against gold-medal winner Jessi Schipper of Australia, who finished first with a time of 2:06.90.
Also competing on the women's side for the Gators were incoming freshman Elizabeth Beisel (North Kingstown, R.I.) and rising sophomore Sarra Lajnef (Tunis, Tunisia). Beisel competed for the US, finishing 19th in the women's 100 back with a time of 1:01.20, while Lajnef, competing for Tunisia, placed 33rd in the women's 200 free.
The US men's swimming team, coached by University of Florida head swimming coach Gregg Troy, currently is in first place at the end of day one. The US women's squad also is in first place.
