Friday, August 27, 2010 | Women's Golf
The University of Florida women's golf head coach Jan Dowling announced the 2010-2011 schedule today. The Gators will compete in five tournaments during the fall and four in the spring. Three of the tournaments on Florida's schedule have become staples: the Mason Rudolph Women's Championship, Northrup Grumman Regional Challenge and the Gator Women's Golf Invitational while a fourth—the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic—is an event that UF participated in last March. UF will play in two first-time events: the SEC/Pac-10 Challenge and the Labor Day Shootout. Additionally, the Gators will take part in the Cougar Classic, Tar Heel Invitational and the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship. Postseason play begins with the 2011 SEC Championship which will be held from April 15-17 at the Auburn University Club in Auburn, Ala. and culminates with the 2011 NCAA Championships, hosted by Texas A&M, at Traditions Golf Club from May 17-20 in College Station, Texas.
“My goal this year and every year is to get our team in the best possible tournaments so we're competing against the best teams every year. We've been very fortunate to get on good golf courses,” UF Head Women's Golf Coach Jan Dowling said. “We're playing a 36-hole match at TPC Sawgrass, we're playing at Yeamans Hall in Charleston which is an old golf course that's quite well-known. We're playing the Legends Club in Nashville, Tenn. where the NCAA Championships are going to be in a couple years. We're playing Stanford's golf course. We're also playing the Liz Murphey in the spring which is at the UGA Golf Course and they're having the NCAA Championships there as well. Overall, we're playing some great golf courses against some great teams and throughout the entire year, it's all about preparation where we're trying to get ourselves ready for the championship season. I think we did a good job of that and we're excited to get started.”
The Gators begin the fall with the inaugural Labor Day Shootout—a one-day event held at famed TPC at Sawgrass, home of the PGA TOUR's THE PLAYERS Championship—on Sept. 6. Six days later, Florida will head to Charleston, S.C. for the three-day Cougar Classic at the Yeamans Hall Club.
From Sept. 24-26, UF will return to a familiar venue—the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn.—where they will compete in the Mason Rudolph Women's Championship and follow that with the Tar Heel Invitational, located at UNC Finley Golf Course from Oct. 8-10.
The Orange and Blue will complete the fall segment of the schedule by participating in the first-ever SEC/Pac-10 Challenge at the Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, California from Nov. 5-7.
After a 14-week hiatus, the team resumes play with a return trip to the Northrup Grumman Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes, California from Feb. 14-16. Florida then travels to New Orleans, La. for the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship at English Turn Golf and Country Club from Feb. 27-March 1.
UF will host the Gator Women's Golf Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.—a tournament the Gators have won 16 of the 39 times the event has been played—at Mark Bostick Golf Course from March 6-7. The regular season schedule concludes with the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at the UGA Golf Club in Athens, Ga. from April 1-3.
Auburn University will host the 2011 SEC Championship from April 15-17. After the conference championships are completed, the NCAA women's golf committee will select 72 teams to participate in an NCAA Regional at one of three sites: LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla., Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Ind. or Washington National Golf Club in Seattle, Wash. The top eight teams from each regional will earn a place at the NCAA Championships that will be held at the Traditions Golf Club in College Station, Texas.
