University of Florida golfers Phillip Choi (Orlando, Fla.) and Bank Vongvanij (Bradenton, Fla.) qualified for the U.S. Amateur Tournament at the Mark Bostick Golf Course on Tuesday.
Three-hundred sixteen golfers from around the country will travel to the Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place, Wash., to compete Aug. 23-29.
Vongvanij will make his third appearance in the U.S. Amateur Tournament. In 2006, he qualified for match play.
“It is the biggest event of the year,” Vongvanij said. “I am excited for a chance to win and play with professionals (in the next tournament).”
Choi will make his first-ever appearance in this year's tournament.
“This is my first time to qualify,” Choi said. “I am really looking forward to going to Washington and I think I have a good chance to compete.”
Vongvanij returns to the Gator lineup as a senior after being ranked 34th in the Golfweek/Titleist Men's Amateur Rankings.
Choi returns as a sophomore after a successful freshman campaign in which he was named to the All-SEC Freshman Team.
In 2009, former Florida golfer Tyson Alexander qualified for the tournament and fell after second round competition.
