Monday, August 30, 2010 | Lacrosse
Gators assistant lacrosse coach, and former Maryland standout, Caitlyn McFadden has been nominated for Sportswoman of the Year by the Women's Sports Foundation. Each year, fans are given the chance to help recognize those superhuman efforts that distinguish two champion athletes (one individual, one team) as Sportswoman of the Year. Athletes were considered for the 2010 award based on their athletic achievements between August 1, 2009 and July 31, 2010. Voting concludes Tuesday, August 31 at midnight EST.
McFadden is coming off a highly decorated career with the 2010 National Champion Maryland Terrapins. In her senior season, she was named the Tewaaraton Award Winner and Honda Sports Award Winner (and was a finalist for both awards in 2009), the ACC Player of the Year and Tournament MVP (also won both conference awards in 2009), IWLCA National Midfielder of the Year, and the Suzanne Tyler Award winner, which is awarded to the University of Maryland Female Athlete of the Year. She was also a two-time IWLCA First-Team All-American in her final two years as a Terp and IWLCA Second-Team All-American in her sophomore year.
McFadden served as the captain for the Terrapins in her junior and senior seasons. She is also a member of the United States Women's Lacrosse National Team, having won a gold medal at the 2009 FIL World Cup in Prague, Czech Republic.
McFadden is one of only three collegiate athletes on the list of finalists, joining Maryland field hockey star Katie O'Donnell and Penn State volleyball All-American Megan Hodge. Other athletes up for the prestigious award include Meghan Agosta (Ice Hockey), Betsey Armstrong (Water Polo), Jennie Finch (Softball), Larissa Franca & Juliana Felisberta Silva (Beach Volleyball), Kaillie Humphries & Heather Moyse (Bobsled), Diana Taurasi (Basketball) and Marta Vieira da Silva (Soccer).
The Women's Sports Foundation will celebrate the accomplishments of the top women athletes at the 31st Annual Salute to Women in Sports Awards gala on Tuesday, October 12, 2010. The annual fundraising gala hosted by Mary Carillo will take place at New York City's famed Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.
Each year, the Women's Sports Foundation recognizes these women for their incredible achievements as members of a team and as individual performers. Athletes were considered for the 2010 ballot based on their athletic achievements between August 1, 2009, and July 31, 2010. Nominations for the Sportswoman of the Year - Individual and Team awards are made by sport governing bodies and the public.
