Lochte Swims World's Best Time, Beisel Sets School Record on First Day of National Championships

Four Gator swimmers earned top-10 finishes Tuesday on day one of the 2010 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships in Irvine, Calif. Former Gator swimmer Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.) turned in the fastest time in the world this year in the men's 400-meter individual medley finals.
Lochte became the first Gator athlete this week to win an event at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center, turning in a 2010 world-best time of 4:09.98 in the 400 IM finals. The time beat out second-place finisher Tyler Clary by more than four seconds (4:14.12). Rising senior Mike Joyce (Vorhees, N.J.) competed in the finals of the 400 IM as well, finishing 13th with a time of 4:24.03.
“After the first 50 (of the breaststroke leg), I just went for it,” Lochte said. “I've done the work. I've trained for it, now I just have to step up and race.”
Incoming freshman Elizabeth Beisel (North Kingstown, R.I.) made history of her own by setting the women's school record in the finals of the 200 IM. The 2008 Olympian finished fifth with a time of 2:12.11. Junior Teresa Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa.) finished seventh in the same event with a time of 2:13.48, the second-fastest women's time in school history.
Senior Conor Dwyer (Winnetka, Ill.), the reigning 2010 Division I National Men's Swimmer of the Year, finished sixth in the men's 400-meter freestyle finals with a time of 3:51.57. Dwyer's preliminary time of 3:51.40 was good for fifth-best all-time in school history on the men's side. Logan Storie (Corvallis, Ore.) also swam in the 400 free, finishing 28th in the prelims. His time of 3:53.93 tied his 2009 mark for eighth-fastest in school history on the men's side.
The 2010 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships serve as the USA National Team selection for the 2010 Pan Pacific Championships, 2010 Junior Pan Pacs, 2010 Short Course World Championships and the 2011 World University Games.
