University of Florida teammates Jessica Yadloczky (Casselberry, Fla.) and Evan Jensen (Belleair, Fla.) recorded a fifth-place finish at the inaugural Hooters Women's Collegiate Team Championship, finishing with a five-under, 283.
The three-day event, held at Achasta Country Club in Dahlonega, Ga., featured 53 teams of two collegiate golfers from the same university. The opening round used an alternate shot format in which players alternated hitting the same ball. The second round featured a best ball format in which each player on a team plays her own ball throughout the round and the low score on each hole serves as the team score. The final round counted the aggregate score of each pair.
In regard to the unique arrangement of this tournament, Yadloczky said, “There's a lot of leaning on each other and cheering each other on but I enjoyed it and I think Evan did too.” Jensen added, “It kept things light and different and made you think a little bit. It was different to be able to help each other out during the round which we don't usually get to do even when we play together in a regular tournament, so it was fun.”
The Gator duo combined to shoot a two-under, 142 on the final day of competition. After playing the front nine at three over par, the pair finished strong, firing a collective five-under on the back nine, highlighted by eagles on consecutive par-5's—first by Jensen on 14 and then Yadloczky on 15.
“After that 13th hole, we just stepped it up,” Yadloczky said. “(Jensen) made eagle on 14 and that put fire in our bellies to know that we didn't just come out here to finish in the middle of the crowd. We wanted to finish strong.” Her partner, Jensen, agreed. “We really fed off of that. Those were three good holes for us. We knew we had to take advantage of them and we did.”
The late surge helped vault them from a three-way tie for 10th when the round began to sole possession of fifth, 10 strokes behind tournament winners Michelle Shin and Cheyenne Woods from Wake Forest University.
