Brantley on "take the cheese'' and other tidbits
Monday, September 20, 2010 | Football, Scott Carter
Late in the third quarter of Saturday's win at Tennessee, Gators quarterback John Brantley hit receiver Frankie Hammond for a 7-yard touchdown pass that put the Gators up for good in their 31-17 win.
Brantley's scoring pass to Hammond gave the Gators a 17-10 lead and came less than five minutes after Tennessee tied the game on Matt Simms' 49-yard touchdown pass to Denarius Moore.
How did the Gators do it? "They took the cheese on that,'' Brantley said.
They is Tennessee's defense. The cheese is the outside route ran by receiver Trey Burton on the play.
During his Monday press conference with the media, Brantley referred to "take the cheese'' on several occassions, so it was only a matter of time before someone asked about all the cheesy references.
Brantley remained on cue during his explanation of the play.
"We knew as long as they took the cheese on the out route with Trey, that [play] would be open.''
A couple of other quick notes from Monday's press conference:
-- The SEC announced that freshman LB Jelani Jenkins is the conference's freshman of the week. Jenkins had six tackles and a sack at Tennessee.
--Kickoff for the Florida at Alabama game on Oct. 2 is 8 p.m. on CBS. The game is a rematch of the 2009 SEC title game, won 32-13 by Alabama.
--Meyer said Brantley, OL Marcus Gilbert, OG Maurice Hurt, C Mike Pouncey and WR Carl Moore (offensive player of game) graded out as champions.
--DE Justin Trattou, LB Jon Bostic, DL/LB Duke Lemmens (defensive player of game) and Jenkins graded out as champions on defense.
--Meyer said OL James Wilson had athroscopic knee surgery earlier today and will not be available against Kentucky.
