The Kay Yow Cancer Fund?, in partnership with The V Foundation and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association, held its third annual 4Kay® Golf Classic presented by Nike on September 12-13, 2010, at Barton Creek Resort & Spa in Austin, Texas.
The University of Florida's Amanda Butler was one of more than 150 women's basketball coaches, administrators and supporters of the Fund who participated in the Pairings Party and the golf outing, which raised over $171,000 for women's cancer research.
“What an exciting time we had in Austin for the 4Kay Golf Classic presented by Nike,” said Marsha Sharp, Executive Director of the Fund. “One of Coach Yow's reasons behind starting the Kay Yow Cancer Fund was the idea of uniting coaches for a common cause. It is great to see our coaches and supporters remaining passionate in the quest to find a cure for cancer.”
The 4Kay Golf Classic Pairings Party took place on Sunday, Sept. 12, with a live charity auction and a silent auction raising additional monies for the event. Thanks to items donated from various organizations, over $40,000 was raised through both the live and silent auctions. Raffle tickets for a Cybex Pink Treadmill were also sold for $100 apiece.
In three years, the 4Kay Golf Classic has raised nearly $500,000 for women's cancer research. All proceeds benefit the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Donations can be mailed to Kay Yow Cancer Fund/PO Box 3369/Cary, NC 27519-3369.
In December 2007, the late Kay Yow established the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, in partnership with The V Foundation and the WBCA, as a 501 c(3) charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against women's cancers through raising money for scientific research, assisting the underserved and unifying people for a common cause.
The late Kay Yow, former N.C. State University head women's basketball coach, was a past president and founding member of the WBCA. Yow was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987, and battled the disease until her passing in 2009. In her 36 years as a head coach at the college level, Yow was one of only six Division I head women's basketball mentors to achieve 700 career victories. She was an Olympic Gold Medal Head Coach in 1988.
