Former UF decathlete Steve Mesler, who won a bobsledding gold medal at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, has a new title to add: Hall of Famer.
Mesler, 32, will be inducted into the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame on March 27 in Commack, N.Y.
Mesler graduated from UF in 2000 after an injury-plagued college career prevented him from reaching his goals. He later joined the U.S. 4-man bobsled team, a change of direction highlighted by winning the gold medal he now shows off at various speaking engagements around the U.S. and Canada.
Mesler returned to UF in October to serve as Grand Marshal of the Homecoming Parade.
He has retired from bobsledding but said in October that traveling the country and sharing his story of perseverance is a rewarding way to finish his athletic career.
“It definitely softens the blow of retirement,'' Mesler said. “I'm content and ready to move on. I'm ready to find some other challenges.''
